A day after main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Yalova deputyMuharrem İnce announced his withdrawal from the party leadership race, former İstanbul deputy Umut Oran announced on Thursday that he will not be a candidate for the party’s top post during the election this weekend.

In a written statement on Thursday, Oran said: “I am not a candidate for the chairmanship. I have not given up but am postponing it. As I said when I first got into politics: I will change the dirty structure of politics one day.”

Underlining that his withdrawal is not in support of CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, Oran said he condemns Kılıçdaroğlu’s anti-democratic attitude. He added that he will also not join in the election to become a Party Council member.

Oran stated he will continue to work with his colleagues to take the CHP into government. “This is a break for me to understand the mistakes the party has made and an opportunity to take bigger steps. In the meantime, I will travel to the provinces, districts and towns of Turkey,” he said.

İnce also said in his written statement that he is withdrawing because his candidature will legitimize the present party administration’s anti-democratic attitudes. “I will not compete for any position in the upcoming election because my candidature will somehow help the present administration to show themselves that they won the election democratically,” he said.

As the CHP will hold its annual congress to elect a new leader for the party on Jan. 15-16, its present head, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, will see his chairmanship challenged as the party’s percentage of the vote was around the 25 percent mark in both the June 7 general election and Nov. 1 snap election of last year. After the withdrawal of İnce and Oran, only İzmir deputy Mustafa Balbay remains to challenge Kılıçdaroğlu for party leadership.
